Dairy Bar - Whitley City, KY

We stopped for a fun little lunch and a special dessert at the Dairy Bar in Whitley City, Kentucky.

I'd been here once before, after spending the day driving all kinds of crazy backroads through Tennessee and Kentucky. I never thought I'd find it again, but with the power of the internets, anything is possible. And with the power of GPS, you realize it's only a couple blocks off the main highway through town, US127, and NOT a million miles from civilization.

This 50's style diner is nothing fancy, but the selection of hamburgers, hot dogs, plate lunches, and desserts is inexpensive and they all taste yummy!

Bear had a Dixie Burger, which was a double cheeseburger, with a bun "toasted to perfection" in her exact words. I had a hamburger steak, served with Texas toast and cole slaw to die for. I normally don't even LIKE cole slaw, let alone love it...  But this stuff was dreamy.  Ogie just had a hot dog, and Trillian opted for a regular cheeseburger. We all split a couple orders of fries and some mozzarella sticks.

And you can't NOT have dessert in a place with desserts drawn all over the windows. So, us gals split a Banana Split, and Ogie had a vanilla swirl cone.

We enjoyed the 50's tunes, and the window art added to the overall ambiance. If you're looking for an authentic diner experience that won't break the bank, and you happen to be in this little slice of Kentucky, check out The Dairy Bar!

After all, it was not only enjoyed by Trips 'n Toys, but the folks at Southern Living Magazine recommend it, too!

Fulin's Asian Cuisine - Oak Ridge, TN

As a parent of young children, have you ever driven by a snazzy-looking restaurant you'd like to try, but then you glance in your rear view mirror, and take note of the kids, dirty and sweaty from a day of hiking and playing in the creek, and you just aren't sure you are what the restaurant staff was hoping would walk through the door?

That's what we were dealing with tonight. We were cruising through Oak Ridge trying to find "something other than pizza" and we came across Fulin's Asian Cuisine. Even though it's just in a strip center location in with the newly-built Kroger grocery store, it definitely looks like an upscale sort of place.

Bibby is a sushi junkie, though, so we decided to give it a shot. Upon entering, it was definitely a nice establishment, but it was also a bit more laid back than it appeared on the outside. We didn't feel nearly as out of place as I thought we might.

Our waitress was very friendly, and she guided us through a few of the menu choices and the day's specials. For our sushi choices, we went with two Philly rolls, a Spicy Crunchy Crab roll, and an American Dream. For our entrees, we ordered Orange Chicken, Kung Pao Chicken, and Coconut Shrimp, with Ogie opting for a Tempura Chicken Kid's Meal, with a side order of "Chicken-on-a-stick" his personal favorite.

We are the type of diners that like to try different versions of the things we know we like. We're not totally adventurous. We're on a little too much of a budget to risk expensive versions of the unknown. But our idea of a perfect meal is a unique take on our preferred tastes. We order as many different things as the pocketbook allows, and then we each let the others have a bite, or two, or even three, so we can all enjoy a taste of everything, and possibly fall in love with something new.

I'd like to give Fulin's a giant 5 STARS on meeting us at our definition of a perfect meal. Each thing we ordered was a familiar favorite, but was beautifully presented, and served to us in a fancy, exiting manner. My orange chicken was embellished with geometrically placed orange slices, and Bear's coconut shrimp was served as a mountain of giant prawns, surrounded by broccoli, drizzled with coconut sauce, and topped with rice noodles.

The sushi rolls were awesome. SOOO delicious, and plated so beautifully. The pink flower on the corner of the dish made Bibby the happiest little girl on the planet.

There were plenty of ooh's and aah's, followed by many, many yummmms....

Fulin's wasn't an inexpensive meal, but it wasn't terrible. Sushi rolls range from $6-$18, and our entrees were about $15 each.  In my opinion, though, the effort put forth for an interesting take on the preparation and plating of each meal, was well worth the price.  You can get cheaper Asian-inspired meals, but they won't be as delicious, and they certainly won't be as pretty!

Fulin's appears to be a Tennessee-based operation with a dozen or so locations throughout the state. Next time you are looking for a Chinese of Japanese meal where you can see and feel the quality difference, without the crazy price tag or the haughtiness of a gourmet establishment, check and see if there is a Fulin's near you!

French Broad Chocolate Lounge - Asheville, NC

Oh, my!

If you love chocolate, your mothership has landed!

I've read a few reviews that call this place expensive and refer to the staff as being pretentious. While it isn't exactly cheap, it isn't overwhelming. Although, anything adds up quickly when you have 4 kiddos.

Most importantly to note, though, the staff was PHENOMENAL. One young guy in particular, was probably the friendliest, most enthusiastic, most attentive service employee I've seen in years. I wish I would have caught his name, and I could kick myself for not having given him a bigger tip!

All in all, we ordered:

Milk Chocolate Hot Cocoa
Salted Caramel Drinking Chocolate
Triple Layered Chocolate Ganache Cake
Cookies and Milk Ice Cream
10 truffles, with a few duplicates

The hot cocoa was our safety net in a comfortable flavor. Heavy on the milk, but still plenty of chocolate. I thought $4.50 for a hot cocoa was a little much, but you're talking to someone who has never been to Starbucks. They have tons of custom flavors and options available, so I guess if you go for something more exotic, the price tag isn't terrible.

The Salted Caramel Drinking Chocolate was the hit of the evening. I've never experienced drinking chocolate, and none of us had any idea what to expect. Oh. My. Heaven in a cup. It's a little hard to explain. It pretty much is melted chocolate with a bit of steamed milk. Heavier in substance than cocoa, but it still flows perfectly when gently sipped. They refer to it as a Melted Truffle, and it wears this honor well. Again, you have tons of flavor options, so have a little fun with this one! You'll be oh-so-glad you did! $4.50 for a cup of the drinking chocolate felt like a smart investment. And one I definitely hope to make again as soon as possible!

The Ganache Cake was yummy, too. The outside layer felt like it could have used a touch of freshness, but the inside ganache was perfect...  They had several options of cake slices, but this one was a definite winner for our collective palates. Next time, I'd like to try the Olive Oil Chocolate Cake, as it also looked amazing and sounded unique. Most of the cake slices ran around $5-$7 each. They weren't as generous as, say, slices from the Cheesecake Factory, but they were definitely larger than you'd get in the average casual dining restaurant.

Ogie is a little less brave, so the Cookies and Milk ice cream was his selection for the occasion. The lady who waited on him was quite patient as he sampled a few choices, and then she loaded him up with a generous double scoop that kept him quite happy. The kids portion was $2 and change, but the double scoop was more our speed at $5.25.

Ogie tried three of the truffles, but they were a bit too exotic for an 8 year old; so we divvied them up amongst the ladies instead. The girls aren't quite as brave as I wish they were, so we didn't get anything vastly avant-garde from the truffle selection, but we each got to try Peppermint, Hazelnut, Turtle, and Sorghum. The kids all gravitated towards the Peppermint and the Turtle. Mama Bear loved them all, and one day will definitely try some of the more unique flavors from their Signature or World Collections, like the Indian Kulfi, Masala Chai, Mole Negro, Earl Grey, and the Canela Picante...

Oh. My. Mothership, take me away!

I'd love to list all your options. From truffle flavors, to cakes, to ice cream, to other cookies and desserts, to all the hot drink choices...  But, you'd be better off visiting www.frenchbroadchocolates.com

Or, you'd be even better suited to go there. Now. Literally. Don't even get dressed. Just jump in your car and drive. To Chocolate Heaven.

PS... Happy 12th Birthday, Bibby!

Rocky's Grill & Soda Shop - Brevard, NC

Rocky's Grill & Soda Shop
50 S Broad Street,
Brevard,
North Carolina

"What a FUN Place to Eat in Brevard, NC!"
Brevard, North Carolina is a fun little town in any season.
In its quaint downtown area, you will find a plethora of unique food choices. Some are more expensive than others, though; so if you are looking for something fun, casual, and not bank-breaking, consider Rocky's Grill & Soda Shop!

If you have kids, you'll definitely want to be checking out the two story O.P Taylor's Toys. If you park on the east side of the building, Rocky's is just two or three doors down.

The second you walk in the door, the 1950's swallow you up and transport you back to a time of good, simple family fun!

The jukebox is cranking out tunes, while the decor and ambiance engulf your senses. Whether you're in the mood for a burger, or a shake... Or even a banana split, Rocky's is going to hit the spot.

The wait staff is super friendly, and they all go out of their way to make sure you and your family are having an absolute blast.

When we visited, my youngest was 11 months old, and she spent the entire visit in her high chair bopping away to the classic tunes.

When you are done eating, be sure to check out the souvenirs, and the awesome shop connected to the diner... Yep, you guessed it! D.D. Bullwinkel's General Store! Whether you feel the need to browse old-fashioned toys, modern hiking supplies, or just spend a few moments absorbing the local flavor, these two places are definitely a load of Brevard-style fun!

For great music, excellent burgers and fries, and super huge, delicious banana splits, Rocky's Grill & Soda Shop gets 5 stars from our gang!

Yum, yum!

National Corvette Museum - Bowling Green, KY

"Awesome History of America's Favorite Car!" By nature, we're not specifically Corvette fans. But this museum is such a top-notch representation of all things Chevrolet, Corvette, Auto Racing, and Mechanical Engineering, that it's impossible not to appreciate the collection of beautiful exhibits.

Upon entering the building, you'll likely see a parade of fresh-off-the-assembly-line Corvettes awaiting "factory pick-up" from their proud new owners. Watching someone take possession of their brand new car is a red carpet affair for everyone in the room! Make sure you catch one of these babies heading out the door!

Also in the lobby is a late-model Corvette in which you can sit, take photos, and otherwise let the kids enjoy.

Once you purchase tickets, you begin your adventure with a short film, and the background of Louis Chevrolet and his company that would go on to produce the Corvette.

As you work your way through the perfectly preserved cars in their gorgeous displays, you'll eventually come to an awesome play area to keep little hands busy and little minds engaged. Kids will enjoy hanging out in the drive-in, serving up meals in the 50's style cafe, and learning all about car maintenance as they use a variety of tools to work on a life-sized model car on a lift!

Changing tires, checking under the hood, and experimenting with tools will put a smile on everyone's face. My kids could have sat here for hours working on cars, but luckily they were just as fascinated with the exhibits; so after a while, on we continued.

Next, you'll come to a few rooms on Chevrolet racing history. From Le Mans to NASCAR, and a little bit of everything in-between, you'll see racing suits, trophies, posters, paraphernalia, and, of course, RACE CARS!

The last permanent exhibits cover Corvettes through the years, complete with unique body types and histories, and then an exhibit on the materials and construction of these iconic automobiles.

There is a section available for traveling exhibits, and many of them are very kid-friendly. Be sure to check this area out. You never know what you might find!

If you watch the news, you've possibly heard that a giant sinkhole opened under the museum and swallowed 8 of the 28 rare cars on display in the Skydome in February of 2014. We visited while they were still retrieving cars from the sinkhole, and were able to capture some rare photographs of the damaged floor and the mangled vehicles.

In the past year, the floor was filled with limestone and refinished to its original condition. Most of the cars have also been painstakingly restored to as original condition as possible. I have included some of our photographs so you can see what happened. If you visit now, everything should be safe, secure, and completely as it was.

In addition to the museum, you will find a huge gift shop selling everything from toy cars to limited edition collectors' merchandise. Great gift ideas for kids, all the way to Corvette Connoisseurs...

There is also a 50's style cafe serving burgers, sandwiches, and great ice cream and milk shakes. The staff here seemed like they had better things to do than serve us, and we were the only people in the place as closing time was approaching; but the food was good for a quick bite to eat after spending most of the day immensely enjoying the museum.

*As a side note, if your family is into letterboxing, come prepared. There are several gems to be discovered throughout the museum.

Overall, whether you are a Corvette Enthusiast, a car lover, or just a kid along for the ride, there is great deal of enjoyment to be had here at the Corvette Museum. If you're in the Bowling Green area, take your family for a spin!
