Dairy Bar - Whitley City, KY

We stopped for a fun little lunch and a special dessert at the Dairy Bar in Whitley City, Kentucky.

I'd been here once before, after spending the day driving all kinds of crazy backroads through Tennessee and Kentucky. I never thought I'd find it again, but with the power of the internets, anything is possible. And with the power of GPS, you realize it's only a couple blocks off the main highway through town, US127, and NOT a million miles from civilization.

This 50's style diner is nothing fancy, but the selection of hamburgers, hot dogs, plate lunches, and desserts is inexpensive and they all taste yummy!

Bear had a Dixie Burger, which was a double cheeseburger, with a bun "toasted to perfection" in her exact words. I had a hamburger steak, served with Texas toast and cole slaw to die for. I normally don't even LIKE cole slaw, let alone love it...  But this stuff was dreamy.  Ogie just had a hot dog, and Trillian opted for a regular cheeseburger. We all split a couple orders of fries and some mozzarella sticks.

And you can't NOT have dessert in a place with desserts drawn all over the windows. So, us gals split a Banana Split, and Ogie had a vanilla swirl cone.

We enjoyed the 50's tunes, and the window art added to the overall ambiance. If you're looking for an authentic diner experience that won't break the bank, and you happen to be in this little slice of Kentucky, check out The Dairy Bar!

After all, it was not only enjoyed by Trips 'n Toys, but the folks at Southern Living Magazine recommend it, too!

Fulin's Asian Cuisine - Oak Ridge, TN

As a parent of young children, have you ever driven by a snazzy-looking restaurant you'd like to try, but then you glance in your rear view mirror, and take note of the kids, dirty and sweaty from a day of hiking and playing in the creek, and you just aren't sure you are what the restaurant staff was hoping would walk through the door?

That's what we were dealing with tonight. We were cruising through Oak Ridge trying to find "something other than pizza" and we came across Fulin's Asian Cuisine. Even though it's just in a strip center location in with the newly-built Kroger grocery store, it definitely looks like an upscale sort of place.

Bibby is a sushi junkie, though, so we decided to give it a shot. Upon entering, it was definitely a nice establishment, but it was also a bit more laid back than it appeared on the outside. We didn't feel nearly as out of place as I thought we might.

Our waitress was very friendly, and she guided us through a few of the menu choices and the day's specials. For our sushi choices, we went with two Philly rolls, a Spicy Crunchy Crab roll, and an American Dream. For our entrees, we ordered Orange Chicken, Kung Pao Chicken, and Coconut Shrimp, with Ogie opting for a Tempura Chicken Kid's Meal, with a side order of "Chicken-on-a-stick" his personal favorite.

We are the type of diners that like to try different versions of the things we know we like. We're not totally adventurous. We're on a little too much of a budget to risk expensive versions of the unknown. But our idea of a perfect meal is a unique take on our preferred tastes. We order as many different things as the pocketbook allows, and then we each let the others have a bite, or two, or even three, so we can all enjoy a taste of everything, and possibly fall in love with something new.

I'd like to give Fulin's a giant 5 STARS on meeting us at our definition of a perfect meal. Each thing we ordered was a familiar favorite, but was beautifully presented, and served to us in a fancy, exiting manner. My orange chicken was embellished with geometrically placed orange slices, and Bear's coconut shrimp was served as a mountain of giant prawns, surrounded by broccoli, drizzled with coconut sauce, and topped with rice noodles.

The sushi rolls were awesome. SOOO delicious, and plated so beautifully. The pink flower on the corner of the dish made Bibby the happiest little girl on the planet.

There were plenty of ooh's and aah's, followed by many, many yummmms....

Fulin's wasn't an inexpensive meal, but it wasn't terrible. Sushi rolls range from $6-$18, and our entrees were about $15 each.  In my opinion, though, the effort put forth for an interesting take on the preparation and plating of each meal, was well worth the price.  You can get cheaper Asian-inspired meals, but they won't be as delicious, and they certainly won't be as pretty!

Fulin's appears to be a Tennessee-based operation with a dozen or so locations throughout the state. Next time you are looking for a Chinese of Japanese meal where you can see and feel the quality difference, without the crazy price tag or the haughtiness of a gourmet establishment, check and see if there is a Fulin's near you!

Bayou Cafe - Savannah, GA

When you're on the East Coast, it's easy to think seafood when you're looking for a meal. And there are no shortage of awesome seafood joints along River Street and throughout the Savannah area. If you're into Southern Comfort Food, Savannah has become a destination in its own right for people looking to dine at Lady & Sons, featuring the cuisine of popular chef, Paula Deen,

But if you find yourself looking for something a little more unique... Something a little farther off the beaten path for this particular area... Consider the Bayou Cafe, tucked into a little side location along River Street in the Historic District.

Featuring amazing Cajun food, as well as huge, juicy burgers for those in your party that may not want that Cajun flavor as much as you do, this place was AWESOME!

We're HUGE fans of everything Cajun, from culture, to history, to FOOD.

The menu is pretty compact, and the restaurant is, too. But there is no shortage on the HUGE flavor they are going to serve you.

We ordered sampler platters, and had a wide array of Cajun flavors set before us. In the picture below, you'll see Andouille Jambalaya, Crawfish Etouffee, and Seafood Gumbo.

Even as I'm posting these pictures, my mouth is watering just remembering this place...  So, if you find yourself yearning for a little taste of New Orleans while on River Street, check out the Bayou Cafe!

I'm almost tempted to drive back there right now.  Yummmm.

Even Logan's burger was HUGE and JUICY and YUMMMM!!

Just a little more ketchup!

And just enough ketchup to save a little for later!

Crazy 'Bout Crawfish - Breaux Bridge, LA

Crazy 'Bout Crawfish is one of our favorite little Cajun flavored pit stops!

The Sampler Platter offers a little bit of everything, and packs a lot of punch in each serving!

Kids' meals are served up in the cutest little wooden pirogues. You can even purchase them as souvenirs.

Anyone craving alligator? This is the place to give it a try!

Gumbo, Jambalaya, Etouffee, Maque Choux, and so much more!

And check out Cajun Power. Mix this sauce with a little mayo, and you have the perfect dipping sauce or sandwich spread. Every time we visit we have to bring a few bottles home with us!

Gumbo

Okay, so Trillian didn't like the Fried Gator Bites, but you might!

So much YUM!
